Why Project Contempo?

There is a sense of urgency to reach out and support of young Canadian Asians as the church leaders of the next generation. This is our target audience. The moral fibres of Canadian society are changing - abortion and same-sex marriage are examples. Like the story about Eutychus in Acts 20, Canadian Asian have said that the traditional ministry approaches - though successful with the older generation - simply miss the target when applied to the 2nd and 3rd generation Canadian Born Asian. While many Canadian Asian young Christians are fervent Christians at home and zealous on campus, these are also the realities:

  • Many young Canadian Asian Christians are highly competent and successful in their careers but are drifting away from God and church.
  • Even if the Canadian Asian Christians still go to church, many are feeling discouraged and burnt-out from serving from their own strength and out of obligation, rather than from the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Despite a common ancestry, the young Canadian Asians grow up in a culture very different from that of their parents.
  • Although exposed to Christianity since childhood, the inherited faith of young Canadian Asian Christians are being tested and validated as they live in today's society confronted with these issues:
    1. Affluence (sudden wealth)
    2. Bi-cultural (racial and ethnic background)
    3. Cloning (technology)
    4. Decay (morality)
    5. Enron (ethic in the workplace)
    6. Family (marriage, parenthood, elderly parents)
    7. Globalization (commercial global village)
  • The Canadian Asians (Christians and Non-Christians) have high ideals, deep spiritual interests, and boundless energy. If the church can reach these young people with the Gospel, the church would harness a huge driving force that could influence society and further the Kingdom of God.

We are obligated to pass the baton of our core values onto the next generation. Surely we do not want to face a situation as in the days of Joshua when "after the past generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel." (Judges 2:10)
